Round 2 Recap: 2012 PLAYERS Championship

Second round of the Players Championship with Zach Johnson, Matt Kuchar and Kevin Na tied for the lead at -8 under par.  Friday is always one of my favorite days on the PGA Tour as we get to see the guys on the cut line struggle a little bit to make the weekend.  Who rallied back and who got the weekend off?  World #1 Rory McIlroy did not make it to the weekend, US Open Champs Reteif Goosen, Ernie Els, Graeme McDowell and Lucas Glover, Tommy 2 Gloves Gainey (my favorite golf reality show player), Ryan Palmer and Webb Simpson (both had a great finish last week), and several others who have played well at Sawgrass in the past.

Who did play well on day two?  Tiger Woods of course.  After his first round 74 he followed up a Friday round of 68 with 4 consecutive birdies to get himself into the weekend.  Tiger doesn’t have a chance to win, but its nice to see him play well after a bad Thursday round (especially after not making the cut last week).   Past players champion Sergio Garcia also had a nice Friday round to squeak him past the cut line.  And everyone’s fan favorite Phil Mickelson had two solid rounds of 71 71 to hit the cut line right on the number.

How about telling us about some good shots Chicago Golf Guy?
Masters Champion Zach Johnson and PGA Tour rookie John Huh had the low rounds on Friday with 66.  John Huh is a PGA Tour rookie and a half, with one win already, three top 10’s, 9 or 12 cuts made, $1.7 millions in winnings this year, and 18th in the FedEx Cup Standings… like I said a rookie and a half.

I don’t know about you guys but I am excited to see what happens the rest of the weekend at Sawgrass.  I love the golf course, the last three are some of the most exciting finishes on the PGA Tour (not to mention they make for great TV), and the title of golf’s 5th Major makes for an exciting Mothers Day weekend.
