Round 2 Recap: 2012 Valero Texas Open

A shortened day two (and unfinished) due to thunderstorms yesterday at the Valero Texas Open.  Even though the weather was bad, the scores were hot on Friday, with Ben Curtis as our kind of second round leader.  Ben Curtis the 2003 British Open Champion (I know I didn’t remember that either) has not won on the PGA Tour since 2006, not quite sure how that will effect his weekend play.  Our first round leader and course record holder, Matt Every has a few holes left to finish his second round.  but after his scorching -9 under par 63 on Thursday he is +2 on Friday with two holes to play.

PGA Tour Journeyman David Mathis has a great chance at taking down his first PGA Tour victory.  After consecutive rounds in the 60’s and the gift of the putter gods (he made everything he looked at), if all things continue to go his way David will be a very happy 1st time PGA Tour winner on Sunday evening.  Who else is in the hunt going into the weekend (I know I know there are almost done with the second round): Ryan Palmer, Cameron Triangle, and Chicago’s very own Kevin Streelmen.

I know that the field is not great at this years Valero Texas Open (not a ton of big names), but it is nice to see the younger guys, and the guys on their last legs out there trying to win.  I do love when the big guys win, because it is great for the game and for TV and the sponsors.  However, its nice to hear about a guy who hasn’t won in 6 years, or never, or is a rookie take down a full field event.  Plus the stress and the likelihood of someone making a double to force a playoff makes the game a little more interesting.
