An interesting 3rd round in Memphis with some rollercoaster high’s and lows for a good portion of the field. Rory McIlroy was one of those players with many highs, and also many lows. 4 birdies and 6 bogeys for McIlroy was good enough to be within one shot of the lead for our 36 hole leader. The 54 hole lead belongs to Davis Love III, Nick Ohern, and John Merrick.
But lets not forget the rest of the field. There are literally dozens of players within a few shots of the lead, and the doesn’t count a really low round on Sunday to catapult someone to the top of this tournament. Sunday in Memphis could literally be anyone’s day. I do always pick a winner though, and typically put the kibash on them.
So here are the Chicago Golf Guy’s picks: Rory Mcilroy, Kevin Stadler and Dustin Johnson and JB Holms. I know that is more than one player, but I got a feeling on all of them. Rory, is playing great going into the US Open, and he is really hitting his stirde. I believe he is too young and too confident to believe that he can’t win today, and defend his title at the US Open next week. Kevin Stadler I like because any guy out there willing to use the long putter, and do so well with it, is good in my book. A few putts drop for the new walrus and he got himself his first PGA Tour Victory. Dustin Johnson is right in the mix of things, even though he has been back for only two weeks from a 2 month injury and this is his first time at the TPC Southwind. DJ has the skills to win a lot of tournaments, if his putter gets its mojo working, he could be carrying a new trophy out to California and the US Open. Last but not least JB Holms, hits it a ton, and has the short game to get a W. I would love to see JB win, and it couldn’t happen to a nicer guy if it does.
Who knows what will happen on Sunday, but I for one am excited. Does anyone know why they are playing so early in Memphis? Seems like the last groups are going to be done before the broadcast starts on CBS.
