I know I know its old news, Tommy Gainey won in St Simons Island at the McGladrey Classic with a 10 under par 60. This is Tommy’s first PGA Tour win, and he is one unlikely story. I mean take away the fact that he uses two gloves, and that he wears said gloves during the entire round (yup even when putting), he got his start on the PGA Tour from a TV show. The Big Break is how and why we all know Tommy Gainey, but from now on he will no longer to be the biggest star fromt he Big Break, he is a PGA Tour Winner.
Not only did two gloves win with style, and with an amazing 60 final round to come back from 7 shots behind the leaders, and beat future hall of famers Davis Love, Jim Furyk and LSU fan David Toms, he very easisly could have become only the fifth player in PGA Tour history to shoot 59.
“Actually, I wasn’t thinking about 59,” Gainey said. “All I did all day was just try to make birdies and a lot of birdies because when you’re seven shots back, your chances of winning a PGA TOUR tournament, especially with the leaders, Davis Love III and Jim Furyk, it don’t bide in your favor, man.”
After another birdie on the 16th, Gainey just needed to birdie one of the final two holes to become just the sixth player in PGA TOUR history to shoot a 59.
His tee shot on the par-3 17th landed 44 feet away and he two-putted for a par. On the 18th, Gainey wrapped his two black gloves around his driver and ripped a drive 325 yards down the middle – so far that it rolled through the fairway into the rough.
Gainey played a nice approach, though, and it came to rest 19 feet, 3 inches from the hole. That was all that stood between him and history. And Gainey, who finished with only 24 putts, left it an inch short.
Afterward, his caddie Marvin King told Gainey, “Of all the people on TOUR that could have shot 59, I didn’t think you’d be the one that would leave it short.”
Gainey tapped in for a winning round and course record on Sunday, but had to wait to see if his score in the clubhouse would win. After a two hour wait (talk about agonizing wait there) Tommy Gainey’s first win was official and in the books. You have to love a guy who comes out, swings like a baseball player, wears two gloves, got famous because of a TV show called the Big Break, defies all odds to get on the PGA Tour, looses his card, fights his way back to the big show and then takes down a very solid field with some great talent, all while almost becoming the 5th guy in history to break 60 on tour…it was quite a Sunday for Tommy Gainey, and the Golf Channel.
I am sure we will see a lot more guys out on the muni tracks playing with two gloves now that Gainey is a PGA Tour winner. All I know is if we get a kid whose a fan of Fowler and Gainey, we could see a kid out there with all puma gear on, and two gloves. I guess it could be worse.
