Third round of the Memorial Tournament is in the books with Spencer Levin as our leader at -8 under, only three players managed to break 70 on Saturday. Tiger Woods gave us some highs and lows but finished one over par, and four shots off the leader. Rickie Fowler manged one of the 69’s (the low round on Saturday) to catapult himself into 3rd place all by himself. Rory Sabbatini kept the pressue on the field with a one under par 71 to find himself one shot off the lead after 54 holes. If I was a gambling man (which I am to the end of times) I would be happy to be in Rory or Rickie’s spot going into Sunday. If the 2012 PGA Tour season has taght us anything it is that the 54 hole leader does not have a great track record.
How did Spencer manage a 69 on Saturday? With two holes outs no less. With a chip in on the 5th for an eagle (that would have been a tough par had it not hit the hole) and a beautiful hole out from the fairway (roughly 25-30 yards) for birdie on the 10th. Follow that up with a few bogies, but a great par save on the 17th to remain the sole leader after 54 holes.
If the conditions are as tough as they were today, we should be in for a great Sunday finish. There are a lot of big name players that can easily go low, and really shake up the leader board by posting an early low round. My vote is going for The Dread Pirate Fowler to go low and win his second PGA Tour event.
