Round 4 Recap: 2012 Zurich Classic of New Orleans

Jason Dufner is no longer Mr. Weekday, after leading 4 0r 5 times this 2012 PGA Tour Season after 36 holes (including the Masters), Jason finally takes down a winner at the Zurich Classic in New Orleans.  Who did he beat?  None other than the Big Easy Erine Els, in the second playoff hole with a birdie.  Jason and Ernie for that mater both made several key putts coming down the stretch on Sunday afternoon.  Jason Dufner made a 45 footer on 16 for par, a solid 5 footer for par on 17.  Ernie also made some great putts coming down the stretch to stay tied for the lead, but could not get the putter going on 18 or in the playoff for that matter.   He had a putt on the 72nd for the win, and the 73rd, but could not close the door on Durfner (who 3 putted the first playoff hole for par).

This was a tough one for the Chicago Golf Guy.  I really wanted to root for Ernie so he could qualify for the US Open and next year’s Masters tournament.  But on the other hand you have a newbie, who has played so well all season long, but just could not get the W.  So who to root for?  In the long run I think I was just waiting to see what would happen.  I would have been happy for Ernie, just like I am happy for Dufner to win.  Either way the Zurich Classic was going to be either a great first win, or possibly the last win for a hall of famer.

Oh did I mention that Luke Donald shot 67 to finish in 3rd by himself, and to become the world #1 again?  Who would ever think that the words “world #1 again” would come out of my mouth and everyone would feel that way.  I am excited for the upcoming Wells Fargo where we get to see Phil, Tiger and Rory battle it out.  The funny part is that in the commercials, no one mentions world #1 Luke Donald.

Funny place the PGA Tour, but it does make for good TV.

Yes! My putter is hot, I hope I can keep it up.
