Because of the rain on Thursday lots of golf was played in Houston on Friday. Some players almost knocking out 36 holes on Friday to try and catch up from the rain delays on Thursday only to be delayed on Friday by the dark. With that being said most of the field finished on their second rounds on Friday. Only a few int he top 40 still have a few holes left of their second rounds on Saturday morning.
So who’s on top of a wet and wild Shell Houston Open??? A local veteran and Houston resident Jeff Maggert who is atop the field at -12 under par. Carding two 66’s on Thursday and Friday (or mostly Friday) to be the leader at the halfway point (well as close as we are going to get to the halfway point with a break in the play). The Texas A&M Alumni will have his hands full with the rest of the crowd gunning for him.
Brian Davis, Louis Oosthuizen (former Open Champion), Carl Pettersson (our first round leader), Tommy 2Gloves Gainey (everyone’s favorite big breaker), Phil Mickelson, J.B. Holmes, and Keegan Bradley are all within 3 shots of Mr. Maggert. Jeff you are going to need every last bit of fight to keep those jackals off your heels.
Who is the Chicago Golf Guy pulling for???
I wold love to see Tommy 2Gloves pull a rabbit out of his bag and qualify for the Masters. There is just something about his style of play and two glove wearing attitude that makes me believe that he will be a good show at the Masters. I would alos love to see Jeff Maggert continue his stellar play and win one more PGA Tour victory and prove that the 45+ crowd can still hang with the young bucks. But if I was a gambling man (and Mrs. Chicago Golf Guy will tell you that I have a little too much gamble in me) I would put my money on Phil. You can’t go wrong with Phil. He birdied half the holes on the weekend of last years Shell Houston Open to win this tournament, and if anyone can do that again its Phil.
