Round 1 Recap: 2012 Honda Classic

The Honda Classic at PGA National in West Palm Beach Florida starts off the PGA Tour’s “Florida Swing”.  I have been to PGA National, and it truly is one of the nicest golf resort facilities.  The Champion Course ranks as the toughest non major golf course scoring wise on the PGA Tour in 2011.  I have always been a fan of playing where the pro’s play, so I can really see how much better those guys are.

Whats the scoop from the first round? Well Tiger is still having trouble with his putting (just turn on the Golf Channel and its all they talk about).  Rory McIlroy needs a win to come out on top in the world rankings.  There is also some kind of bear loose on the back nine that tolerantly eats players on holes 15,16, and 17.  Oh yeah and the Ryder Cup Captain is our leader by two shots.  DLIII or Davis Love the 3rd as we all know him, our USA Ryder Cup Captain could be the first playing caption in many years ( I am still looking on when the last USA Captain picked himself to play).  I would venture to guess that a win this week by DL3 would push others to convince him to choose himself, but I am going to go out on a limb and say he does not choose himself.  My feeling is that Davis Love is going to want to focus on the match and would not want the press to be all over the captain who chose himself.  That’s just my 2 cents though.

Check out this video from PGATour.com, about three minutes in it goes over the back nine Bear Trap, which is pretty informative on how tough that three hole stretch is.
