Hunter Mahan took out a tough Mark Wilson in the semis, and then potentially the next #1 player in the world Rory McIlroy to win the Accenture Match Play Championship with authority. I still have my record of poorly picked brackets intact with my picks for the final four coming out to 1 out of 4. However I did get what I wanted out of the semi finals, a Ryder Cup preview. With a guarantee of a USA player and a European in the final two matches we as the Television viewers were going to see some Ryder Cup like fireworks. Not only did we get a little Ryder preview, the USA came out on top in both matches. Mark Wilson beat world #3 Lee West Wood on the 18th hole 1 up. Hunter Mahan beat Rory McIlroy decidedly 2 & 1 he was 4 up at one point and was never down in the match).
Even though I am the Chicago Golf Guy, and I do enjoy the world #1 living in Chicago, I was rooting for Rory to win yesterday. I know I know the horror, rooting against an American. I am very excited though that us American’s have not only won the last 9 PGA Tour events, but Hunter Mahan breaks into the top 10 of the world rankings (even though Phil falls out of the top 10). Hunter Mahan played great all week, took out three major winners (Zach Johnson, YE Yang, and Rory McIlroy) to win his second WGC event, and 4th PGA Tour victory.
All the Chicago Golf Guy knows is that after all this match play action, I am chomping at the bit to go to the Ryder Cup in September!
